Featured Plays at Hoang Thai Thanh Theater

1. Rau Ram O Lai

Inspired by the short story Oi Cai Ve Dau! by writer Nguyen Ngoc Tu, Rau Ram O Lai tells the story of Nam Nho, a man who spends more than ten years searching for his wife's child from a previous relationship, who ran away from home at the age of eight.

After losing a buffalo, Cai leaves home and disappears. Nam Nho devotes himself to finding the child, yet earns a reputation as a father who treated Cai badly. Despite traveling from place to place, he refuses to give up hope, carrying a sign that reads "Cai oi ma cho" in the hope of reuniting with the child one day.

Along the way, he encounters people with their own difficult circumstances, including Quach Phu Than, an ice cream seller who dreams of becoming a singer; Diem Thuong, a girl abandoned at birth; and Co Hue, a woman carrying unspoken sorrows. These seemingly chance encounters gradually connect their unfinished stories through compassion and understanding.

Set against the backdrop of Vietnam's Mekong Delta, Rau Ram O Lai explores family bonds, longing, and love that is not always easy to express. It is a compelling choice for audiences who appreciate heartfelt stories inspired by everyday life.

Cast: Thanh Hoi, Ai Nhu, Doan Thanh Tai, Hoang Van Anh, and other performers.

2. Trai Tim Oan Khuat

For audiences who enjoy stories filled with secrets and unexpected twists, Trai Tim Oan Khuat is one of the notable productions at Hoang Thai Thanh Theater.

The story revolves around a family in Phan Rang, where secrets buried for 25 years suddenly threaten to come to light. Trung is the beloved son of Lac and Phung, while Hoang is his older half-brother. Their family life begins to take an unsettling turn when Minh, a childhood friend of the two brothers, unexpectedly discovers a strange statue.

This discovery drives Hoang to investigate the truth about his family. The deeper he delves into the past, the more unanswered questions he encounters, along with secrets that could change everything.

Blending family relationships, personal conflicts, and mystery, Trai Tim Oan Khuat takes audiences on a journey to uncover the truth, revealing how the past can affect the present in unexpected ways.

Cast: Thanh Hoi, Tuyet Thu, Ai Nhu, and other performers.

3. Con Ma Nha Ho Hua

Inspired by the famous legend surrounding the Hua family in Saigon during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Con Ma Nha Ho Hua combines supernatural elements, detective fiction, and psychological drama to explore love, greed, and the hidden side of a wealthy family.

The play takes place in the Hua family's mansion, where an outward appearance of wealth and power conceals numerous secrets. Nhu Quynh, the family's daughter-in-law, discovers that she is suffering from a serious illness. Unwilling to let his wife live in isolation, Hua Minh Trong seeks every possible treatment with the help of his aunt. Meanwhile, Hua Minh Nhan becomes increasingly frustrated because his son has neglected the family business.

Events take a complicated turn when Nhu Quynh suddenly dies. Her unexpected death leads family members to suspect one another, while Inspector Bach Phat begins investigating the truth.

Was it an accident, a conspiracy, or the consequence of secrets that have remained hidden for years? With unexpected developments and psychological tension, Con Ma Nha Ho Hua is worth considering for audiences who enjoy mystery and detective stories.

Cast: Thanh Hoi, Ai Nhu, Quoc Thinh, Cong Danh, The Hai, and other performers.

4. Ai Xuoi Van Ly

Ai Xuoi Van Ly takes audiences into a story of greed, love, and human fate amid a turbulent historical period. The play explores the struggle between good and evil, as ordinary people face powerful figures and carefully orchestrated schemes.

District magistrate Ba Tong and his wife, Mai Trang, seek to exploit the local people to enrich themselves. To achieve their ambitions, they are willing to eliminate anyone who stands in their way, including the young lovers Trong Phuoc and Tuy Nguyet.

As their lives become increasingly affected by greed and injustice, ordinary people must find ways to protect themselves and the things they cherish. The young couple also faces numerous challenges as they become entangled in the power struggles surrounding the magistrate and his wife.

With dramatic conflicts and a story about social injustice, Ai Xuoi Van Ly explores how greed can influence human behavior while raising questions about love and the choices people make in the face of adversity.

Cast: Thanh Hoi, Ai Nhu, Doan Minh Tai, Hong Duyen, and other performers.

5. Bong Hong Cai Ao

Adapted by People's Artist Kim Cuong from the original cai luong play by playwright Hoang Kham, Bong Hong Cai Ao is a celebrated stage production that has been part of Saigon's theater scene for more than 50 years. In Hoang Thai Thanh Theater's version, directed by Ai Nhu, the story of maternal love is brought to life with a distinctive interpretation while preserving the emotional essence of the original work.

The play centers on Tu, a devoted mother who loves her two children, Thao and Hieu, wholeheartedly. However, as her children become drawn to wealth and a luxurious lifestyle, they gradually forget the family values their mother has always cherished.

The story also features Nga, a schoolteacher with a pure and optimistic spirit, and Tu, the stepfather who loves his wife's children as if they were his own. The characters' different personalities and choices create a moving story about love, sacrifice, and the emotional distance that can develop even within a family.

One distinctive feature of Hoang Thai Thanh's production is its nostalgic portrayal of Saigon in the 1970s, complete with references to the hippie movement and vibrant fashion. The combination of a nostalgic setting and a family-centered story makes Bong Hong Cai Ao an emotionally engaging theatrical experience.

If you are looking for a play to enjoy with your family or a story that invites reflection on the meaning of family bonds, Bong Hong Cai Ao is a worthwhile choice.

Cast: Thanh Hoi, Ai Nhu, Xuan Huong, Bich Ngoc, and other performers.
