HOANG THAI THANH THEATRE: BONG HONG CAI AO

Adapted by People's Artist Kim Cuong from the original cải lương script by playwright Hoang Kham, Bong Hong Cai Ao has been one of Saigon's most celebrated theatrical works for over 50 years. In its production by Hoang Thai Thanh Theatre, this moving story of motherly love returns to the stage with a fresh approach while preserving the emotional depth of the original.

The play centers on Mrs. Tu, a devoted mother who loves her children, Thao and Hieu, unconditionally. However, their pursuit of wealth and a luxurious lifestyle gradually leads them to turn away from the family values she holds dear. The story also features Nga, a teacher with a pure heart and a deep appreciation for life, and Mr. Tu, a stepfather who raises and loves his wife's children as if they were his own.

Directed by Ai Nhu, Bong Hong Cai Ao brings 1970s Saigon back to life, capturing the vibrant hippie movement through colorful costumes and period-inspired details. The production also brings together many familiar faces from Hoang Thai Thanh Theatre, including Ai Nhu, Xuan Huong, and Bich Ngoc. Vo Tan Phat takes on the emotionally complex role of Hieu for the first time, while sharing the stage with Phuong Tram in their first theatrical pairing at Hoang Thai Thanh.

A heartfelt story about mothers, family, and the seemingly simple things that mean the most, Bong Hong Cai Ao takes audiences through a range of emotions and reminds us to cherish the love of those who are always there for us.
